At All Smile Dental, we perform a "deep cleaning procedure" or "scaling and root planing" as the first treatment to fight against early to advanced stages of periodontal disease. Scaling and root planing are done if we detect the presence of bacteria deeper than 3 mm within the gum pockets, indicating periodontal disease or gum infection.
Scaling and root planing are most effective in treating gum disease when periodontal pockets are developed between the teeth and gums. These pockets can allow for the accumulation of plaque, tartar, and bacteria that can even reach the tooth root, leading to tooth decay, infection, and ultimate tooth loss. Scaling and root planing procedures can help eliminate this accumulated debris that is below the gum line and seal the periodontal pockets.
Our expert dental team at All Smile Dental performs the safest and efficient root planing and scaling procedures to stop gum disease from progressing to the advanced stages.
What is involved in the scaling procedure?
At All Smile Dental, scaling is done to remove plaque and tartar that are deposited above and beneath the gum line. Scaling is a non-surgical procedure that can be performed either manually or using ultrasonic dental equipment called a scaler.
During manual scaling, the dentist identifies the area of accumulated plaque and tartar and manually scrapes them off. The scaling procedure can also be done using an ultrasonic scaling device that comprises an ultrasonic vibrating tip and water spray that identify the areas with plaque and tartar, eliminate them and washes them off.
What happens during the root planing procedure?
After scaling, we perform the root planing procedure to eliminate plaque from the tooth roots and deeper regions and to smooth out the rough texture to prevent the breeding of bacteria. Root planing procedure is also helpful to enable the natural reattachment of gums and teeth.
Once scaling and root planing are done, the area is disinfected using an antimicrobial.
Benefits of deep cleaning
Stops Gum Disease: A scaling and root planing procedure is one of the best treatment options that help restore gums affected with periodontal disease to their healthy stage.
Prevents Tooth Loss: The formation of large periodontal pockets containing infection and tooth decay can lead to tooth loss. Scaling and root planing procedures can combat these concerns before they lead to tooth loss.
Safeguards the tooth's roots: This treatment can guard the tooth roots, which are affected by the accumulated plaque and bacteria.
Eliminates the bad breath associated with gum disease: Gum disease and tooth decay can lead to severe bad breath; this can be eliminated by scaling and root planing treatments.
A more attractive smile: By removing the superficial stains, plaque, and tartar from the teeth's surface, you can have an attractive smile.
