A bone graft is a surgical procedure performed to replace the lost volume of bone tissue in the jawbone. There are several reasons why the jawbone may shrink or deteriorate including when your natural tooth is extracted.
Jaw bone issues can make the placement of a dental implant quite complicated, thereby denying you eligibility for the restoration.
At All Smile Dental in California, Dr. Singh performs advanced bone grafting procedures to increase jawbone volume and enable you to benefit from dental implant restorations.
When Do You Need Bone Grafting?
A bone graft may be necessary when you decide to replace your missing tooth with a dental implant. Implant screws are placed directly into the jawbone. All patients require optimum jawbone volume to be a suitable candidate for dental implants.
If they are not, the implant restoration may not be stable enough and the likelihood of it getting displaced or knocked out is higher. Dr. Singh recommends bone grafts when the jawbone does not have sufficient volume to hold the implant firmly in position.
How Is Bone Grafting Performed?
Dr. A. P. Singh will comprehensively assess your jawbone using digital scans and X-rays. This data allows our dentist to better view the jawbone and determine the need for a bone graft. Once your requirement and eligibility are confirmed, we will prepare you for bone graft surgery.
Healthy bone tissues can be obtained from various sources, such as the patient’s body, cadavers, artificial synthesis, or bovine bones. The bone tissue will be removed from the donor site and tested meticulously to check for any signs of infection or decay.
Once the tissues are accepted, they will be sterilized.
Before starting the grafting procedure, we will administer local anesthesia to ensure your comfort. The sterilized tissues will be carefully placed near the affected region, and a dissolvable membrane will be used to prevent the minerals from eroding.
After a few months of healing, the newly grafted tissues will fuse with the existing bone, thus increasing its density. We will then take digital X-rays and scans of the jawbone to conclude if its volume is suitable for dental implant placement.
