Oral Hygiene Tips for Vacations

Oral Hygiene Tips for Vacations

The holidays are a busy time. Between shopping, traveling, entertaining, and attending holiday parties, it can be hard to keep up with your oral health routine.

Here are a few tips to ensure you stay cavity-free and can enjoy the holidays.

Avoid Skipping Out

It’s tempting to skip out on brushing your teeth or flossing while traveling, but it’s one of the biggest contributors to cavities. Brushing and flossing are both essential for removing plaque and food particles from your teeth. While you’re on the go, keeping a small travel toothbrush and floss in your purse, briefcase or backpack can make dental care a breeze.

Carry a Travel Kit with You

Keep your oral hygiene kit with you during your trip. Pack your toothbrush, toothpaste, and floss in your carry-on bag. This way, you’ll always have your oral hygiene items with you.

Drink Enough Water

Vacations are a fun way to spend time with loved ones, but it can also take a toll on your oral health. You tend to indulge in more sugar and unhealthy snacks, such as chips and cookies. All that sugar and junk food can do a number on your teeth, so be sure to drink plenty of water to rinse away plaque and food particles.

Rinse with Water After Meals

Vacations can be a lot of fun, but they can also disrupt your oral hygiene routine. Be sure to rinse your mouth with water after meals and snacks. This removes food particles and excess bacteria from your mouth. Rinsing also helps freshen breath.

Use Sugar-free Gum

Studies show that regular chewing of sugar-free gum during travel helps keep saliva production levels high. Saliva helps wash bacteria away, so it’s important to keep your mouth moist while you travel.

See Your Dentist Before Your Trip

Your dentist will ensure that you have healthy gums and teeth. In addition, your dentist can quickly treat existing dental issues. It is much easier to remedy a problem before a vacation than when you are away.

Schedule a Checkup After

If you haven’t seen your dentist in a while, make time for them after you get home. This way, you can discuss any issues that have occurred since your last visit, and your dentist can clean your teeth and address any issues before they become serious issues.
